What are the differences between an acid vs alkaline cleaner?

There are some key differences in choosing the right detergent for your cleaning needs; the pH of a detergent is one dividing line. People commonly use acidic cleaners to brighten or etch metals and are effective at removing any mineral deposits or oxidation on surfaces. Generally, acidic cleaners are also ideal for removing any acid labile substances:  salts, starches, carbonates, and insoluble hydroxides.

Since most soils are acidic, alkaline cleaners are very effective. Alkaline cleaners remove organic residues.  These include: oils, fats, greases, proteins and an array of other soils. Most cleaning applications will involve an alkaline cleaner or a combination of an alkaline cleaner and an acidic cleaner.

When you need to remove rust or paint or clean iron or steel surfaces alkaline cleaners are a wise choice. This is a regular occurrence where gas and diesel engines are broken down for major service and repair. The alkaline cleaners in either spray washers or immersion systems can effectively work into hard to reach areas and produce exceptionally clean surfaces ready for new parts and refinished surfaces.

These Alkaline cleaners will etch reactive metals at higher pH ranges and can give a superior profile for coatings such as liquid paints and powder coatings. Care should be taken to keep concentration, pH, time, and temperature of the cleaning solution at correct levels to obtain the desired results.
