Paper towels come in large rolls and can be very useful in a workshop environment, but may also be costly to use every time you simply want to wipe some grease or paint off your hands.

One should keep rags used for cleaning separate from all purpose rags in your workshop. Cleaning rags should also not be too absorbent. This is because they will soak up large amounts of cleaning soaps or chemicals. In the long run this will be a waste of money. It will also be difficult to wash very absorbent rags properly after using them with chemicals to clean. Rags are not merely just for cleaning. You can apply varnish to a wooden surface with rags as paint brushes may leave obvious streaks on the wooden surface. Your rags should not pile up in a corner of your workshop. Because there might be certain chemicals that may have built up on the rags, this can cause rags to ignite spontaneously. Rags should be properly disposed of and cleaned on a regular basis to avoid combustion and other hazards.
